Wynyard Station is a major transport hub located in the CBD of Sydney. It is one of the busiest stations in the city, first opened in 1932 as part of a network loop servicing the city centre, and consistently expanded from that date.
A major station upgrade was undertaken in 2019 , with the aim of improving the station’s infrastructure, accessibility and capacity. This upgrade included a reconfiguration of the station’s layout, improved pedestrian connectivity and entryways, new lifts and escalators, a new air conditioning system, installation of new public art, and a major review of waterproofing and structural defects across the entire site.
Premier Waterproofing was initially engaged by Sydney Trains to conduct a comprehensive forensic investigation of Wynyard Station, highlighting any existing or potential water-related damage as part of a major station upgrade. Decades of station additions and augmentations, implemented without appropriate waterproofing measures in place, resulted in a long list of defects across the entire station – from the tracks to the entryways, shops and dining areas, platforms, ceilings and air vents.
Following a period of detailed analysis and an exercise in “going down the rabbit hole”, the Premier team pulled together a full list (or ‘diagnosis’) of works required on Wynyard Station. While this list originally went out to tender, Sydney Trains ultimately returned to Premier for the completion of all individual works.
The repairs and leaks were many and varied, covering areas that had not been explored for 50+ years. This included age-related dilapidation, membrane and flashing repairs at the station entryways, stormwater leakage into dining areas, dry rot, failure of window flashings, water seepage to public walkways and office areas, and water transfer in air shafts.
Detailed inspections conducted of the platforms also revealed numerous track-level seepage leaks, specifically on platforms 3, 4, 5 and 6.
The Premier team was engaged to repair, resolve and maintain all waterproofing issues highlighted in their original review of Wynyard Station, working 24 hours a day across the numerous tracks, platforms, shops and pedestrian spaces.
Further work was completed at Wynyard Park on Carrington Street, including an initial site examination, application and compliance with Sydney City Council, removal and disposal of old ventilation units, and the complete construction and installation of new marine grade stainless steel vents.
